Dubai launches tourism stamp to showcase city’s most sustainable hotels.
24th July 2023 – Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) introduced the ‘Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp’ to recognize and promote hotels adhering to its 19 ‘Sustainability Requirements’. Aligned with the UAE Year of Sustainability and Dubai’s commitment to being a leading sustainable tourism destination, the initiative aims to enhance the city’s global standing.
Developed collaboratively with the hospitality sector, the stamp encourages the tourism industry to align with sustainability goals and contribute to the UAE’s NetZero 2050 initiative. The Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp acknowledges a hotel’s dedication to sustainability by showcasing its eco-friendly practices. Hotels across classifications must meet DET’s high standards, including energy and water efficiency, waste management, and staff education. An independent committee will oversee the process.
The stamp features Gold, Silver, and Bronze categories, with hotel nominations open from August 3 to August 31, 2023. Yousuf Lootah, Acting CEO of Corporate Strategy and Performance at DET, emphasized the stamp’s role in promoting excellence in environmental stewardship, aligning with Dubai’s economic agenda and sustainable growth vision.
DET’s broader sustainability strategy encompasses innovative efforts such as the Carbon Calculator, aiding stakeholders in transitioning to sustainable practices. Additionally, the ‘Dubai Can’ initiative advocates reusable bottles and water fountain use, significantly reducing single-use plastic bottles since its launch in February 2022.
As Dubai prepares to host the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp demonstrates the tourism sector’s commitment to eco-friendly practices, enhancing both economic prosperity and environmental responsibility. By encouraging sustainable initiatives, Dubai aims to not only benefit businesses but also contribute to global well-being.

The Stamp process In summary:
- Any Hotel can apply IF they have passed the 19 requirements
- Documents are required to be uploaded as supporting docs
- Hotel applications go through a vigorous external audit process by a 3rdparty
- The awarded level is to be determined by the assessors
- Hotels can apply annually
- The stamp marketing toolkit will be sent to the property once the stamp is issued
- Those issued with a stamp will be promoted on visit Dubai websites and socials etc
- logins for DET are to be used it’s in the same area as the current login information
