i2Coating – Electricity-Free Cooling Paint for all surfaces
Description
i2Coating is a passive cooling paint that reflects solar radiation to lower roof and façade temperatures by up to 30°C. Perfect for the hospitality industry, it keeps indoor spaces cooler, reduces air conditioning demand, and extends building lifespan—without electricity or moving parts. Easy to apply on rooftops, back-of-house, or guest areas exposed to sun.

St. Regis Dubai, The Palm, known for its high standards in guest experience and sustainability, partnered with LHS to explore innovative solutions to reduce solar heat gain in one of its high-exposure outdoor areas — the Regal Ballroom Terrace.
Given the outdoor spaces continuous exposure to intense sunlight, surface temperatures often reached well above ambient, creating discomfort and increasing cooling demands on adjacent indoor areas. To address this, i2Coating (marketed as iPaint) was selected for a comparative performance application on two identical surfaces — one treated with i2Coating and one left untreated as a control.
The passive cooling paint was applied using a three-layer process: two coats of primer and one reflective topcoat. The paint’s technology mimics the Saharan silver ant’s natural radiative cooling abilities, reflecting solar radiation and releasing heat as mid-infrared radiation into space — all without consuming electricity or requiring any active systems.
Quantified Results:
During testing conducted between 11:00 AM and 12:30 PM, ambient temperatures ranged between 41°C and 44°C. The untreated surface consistently recorded temperatures over 56°C, peaking at 59.3°C. In contrast, the i2Coated surface remained significantly cooler, peaking at just 36.6°C.
→ Maximum temperature difference: 22.7°C
→ The i2Coated surface remained below ambient temperature, while the untreated surface exceeded it by more than 15°C.

This clear and consistent cooling effect demonstrated how i2Coating can reduce heat stress in outdoor hospitality environments, create more usable guest spaces, and lower downstream cooling loads inside the property.
Beyond performance, i2Coating also supports sustainability goals:
-
No electricity required
-
VOC-compliant, with REACH and RoHS certifications
-
Meets international environmental standards, including Indias CII GreenPro Label, UAEs Emirates Green Building Council and Hong Kong’s Eco Mark.
St. Regis’ successful pilot confirms the product’s potential in luxury hospitality environments where comfort, aesthetics, and sustainability must co-exist. The property is currently exploring further expansion of i2Coating across other surfaces.
