💌A Note from the Kiosk team
Life is settling down and routine is creeping back in, but the questions about what sustainability means in this new landscape remain.
Contracts are being revisited. Budgets are being cut. Sustainability teams are being asked to justify their existence in a way they weren’t two months ago.
Here is what we know: the hotels that stay the course on sustainability right now are building a competitive advantage. Use this time wisely — make your strategy more efficient, complete the pending work you’ve been deferring: your accessibility gaps, your local sourcing plan, the certifications you started but haven’t finished.
Downtime is not wasted time. It’s the window to build the foundation that holds when things pick up again.

The Human ROI
This Ramadan, we gathered our team and selected partners for an Iftar built on one simple belief: the most meaningful thing we can invest in is people.
The social pillar of sustainability is one of the most important and most underinvested areas of ESG. It’s easy to quantify carbon. It’s harder to quantify genuine human connection, but that doesn’t make it less real. It makes it more important. Social responsibility is something to be practiced at every table, in every conversation, all year long.
That story is often what lands with an owner or GM when carbon numbers don’t.

Events Made Sustainable
As a founding member of the DET Event Sustainability Requirements Technical Advisory Committee, we have built 12 event-focused services designed specifically for GCC hospitality market — covering everything from strategy and planning through to on-site delivery and impact reporting.
If your property has conferences, F&B activations, or corporate events coming up in Q3, now is the time to build sustainability into the brief — not retrofit it afterwards.

In this new partnership with The World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (WSHA), Sustainability Kiosk will lead efforts to develop a regional strategy for the Middle East aligned with global sustainability standards and the Sustainable Development Goals. For our hotel partners, this means direct access to frameworks, tools, and benchmarks that carry weight in owner and board conversations.

HCMI and HWMI Updates: Public Consultation
The World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance has released updated drafts of two widely-used hotel sustainability measurement tools — HCMI v3.0 and HWMI v2.0 — and is inviting industry feedback before they are finalised as formal standards.
Why does this matter to MENA hotel teams?
- HCMI v3.0 Draft – Expanded Scope 3 coverage, stronger GHG Protocol alignment, and improved audit-readiness.
- HWMI v2.0 Draft – New water sources, optional recycled water tracking, water scarcity context via WRI Aqueduct, and enhanced data quality checks.
Our recommendation: review both drafts against your current reporting. The gaps you find are your improvement roadmap. Submitting feedback also signals to your leadership that your team is engaged at the standards level — not just operational.

Update to Green Key Policies 2026 – 2031
Green Key has published its revised criteria 2026–2031 — and for properties currently uncertified, or mid-renewal, this is the clearest external roadmap available for building a defensible sustainability programme.
- The Revised Criteria Framework is organised across seven areas: Sustainable Management, Energy, Water, Waste, Procurement, Guest Awareness, and Living Environment. Two-year certification validity with surveillance checks means it is rigorous enough to carry weight, but structured enough to plan against
Upcoming Webinars: Two sessions will be held to guide stakeholders through the new criteria and processes:
Use the slow period to map your current position against the revised criteria. What you find becomes your gap analysis, your action plan, and your internal business case — in one document.

Episode 47: Sustainability Strategy with Will Silverwood
Managing sustainability across nearly a thousand hotels isn’t straightforward. Host Radhika Arapally chats to Will Silverwood, who led sustainability at Whitbread (the UK’s biggest hotel chain, Premier Inn), built a programme that held through budget cycles, leadership changes, and operational pressure.
Key points:
- Keep your guests in mind—good sustainability should enhance their experience
- Get your leaders aligned from the start
- Pick your biggest carbon problems and tackle those first
- Be straightforward about the numbers—skip the jargon
- Only claim what you can actually deliver
The takeaway?
Hospitality still has plenty of work to do on this, but waiting around for the perfect moment won’t help. You’ve just got to start.
If you are preparing for a conversation with your GM or owner about programme value, this episode is worth 30 mins of your time.
